Honolua Bay Rock Texture

All of the rocks on the Honolua Bay beach have the same round pitted texture. The last time I was at this beach I didn’t take any pictures of their design, so I made it a goal when I returned.

I found a rock that was evenly covered with water and had some nice grooves. With the sunlight reflecting off multiple spots of the rock I set my f-stop to f-22 to enhance them with star-burst effects. With all the highlights balanced out with the deep shadows, an average meter reading gave me the perfect exposure setting.

Turned out to be a pretty cool, interesting picture.

Color or Monochrome?

Due to my 365 Photography Project theme of the month, I have been converting my images to black and white to see their impact. In some cases it it hard to determine which shot I like best among the two. Which one do you like best?

After five long years I finally bit the bullet and got got a new camera. The Olympus E-5 was the camera of choice for me.

It was totally strange for me to be shooting with a new camera tonight. I was more concerned with functions and buttons rather than composition and technique. I know that eventually the camera will become like second nature to me, however, right now it feels so foreign.

I am extremely happy with the image quality!

1/16/11 – Evening Shots

High surf was still strong throughout the day which brought me back to Honl’s beach. I set my tripod up on the rocks that occasionally flooded over with water when the large 10′ + waves came through. I wanted to isolate some rocks in a sea of white water to accentuate the waters movements across them. I didn’t get too terribly wet until a 15′ wave came in which went up to my mid thigh.

1/16/11 – Morning Shots

I could hear the crashing of the waves from the condo. Oahu is expecting 30′ waves while we are getting 20′. There were a couple boogie boarders out riding the sets, but didn’t stay out too long. Another guy attempted to go out and was thrashed by the waves against the rocks. He limped back in and seeked the attention of a passing ambulance. It was quite an entertaining morning.

Crowded Location

Two days ago I spotted a location for shooting the sunsets in the winter time. The sun sets more south so this locations main view point is southern along with nice reflecting pools and dark lava rock for some interest in the shot.

So I am watching the sky progress into a magical sunset and I take off to the location, however, as I approached the beach there are two other photographers already set up for their shot in the spots I chose earlier. “No problem. I’ll just find another spot.” I set up in a nice spot a little ways away when another photographer shows up and stands next to me. When I turned to look at him I notice he has a digital medium format camera.

Kind of a crazy moment. I felt as if I was on a photo trip.
