Whitewash
- posted in Blog
After missing last nights sunset, which was magnificent, I hoped for an equally amazing sunrise. Unfortunately the clouds covered the mountains behind me and blocked any sunrise colors. Instead, I focused my attention to the seascape as more of an over exposed look. Making the clouds and whitewash bright against the dark shoreline rocks.

The American River
- posted in Blog, Favorite, Gallery, Lake Tahoe, Water
Slow shutter abstract photographs of the American river in El Dorado County along HWY 50.
On a day trip up to Lake Tahoe I was amazed to see the American river so full and aggressive. Rarely have I ever seen it this full. Usually the river winds itself through its own river bed, but now, like a bully in a hallway, it requires more room and pushed itself over the sides of the river bed.
Without a tripod I thought to shoot the river with a fast shutter to capture the harsh aggressive feel of the water flow, but it just wasn’t working the way I wanted. The images weren’t interesting. Propping myself against a rock, or tree, and image stabilization on gave me the option for longer exposures. The resulting images of 1 to 2 seconds gave me the aggressive movement I was looking for and with a polarizer filter brought out the color of the river rocks below.

Afternoon After the Tsunami
- posted in Blog
At the end of the day we decided to take a walk down Ali’i Drive to see the damage from the tsunami.
A lot of the stores on the lower level near the sea wall had flooding, but despite the damage some businesses were still open for business. The most surprising damage was to the sea wall and walk path which was completely ripped apart in some spots.
I couldn’t get good shots because of low light and I didn’t have my tripod with me. I did, however, perch my camera on some walls to help steady the shots.

Hawi River
- posted in Blog
Climbing around this river wasn’t as easy as it looks. Every stone was covered in moss and was slippery, so every step I took was extremely careful. I used my tripod in most cases as a cane to help me across the rocks.
Perched on a rock on the edge of a large waterfall I carefully set up and exposed tree shots. I then left to eagerly view the Pololu valley.

Honolua Bay Sunrise
Waves rolling into Honolua beach during a magical sunrise on Maui. There is nothing more peaceful than being alone on the beach during a sunrise.
